Tesla has confirmed it will launch a FSD V14 Lite version specifically designed for the Hardware 3 (HW3) platform in the United States by the end of June 2024, with plans to expand to additional international markets afterward. This software update aims to enable HW3-equipped vehicles to experience core functionalities of the latest FSD v14, including exiting parking spaces, navigating complex urban roads, and reaching destinations—delivering smoother, more decisive driving behavior that closely mimics human operation. Tesla stated that V14 Lite is a distilled version of the full FSD v14, optimized and compressed at the neural network level to accommodate HW3’s limited memory bandwidth, without compromising user-facing features. HW3 owners will not require any additional hardware upgrades to use this version, and its performance will be as close as possible to vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware—provided drivers remain attentive and ready to take control at any time. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, noted that HW3’s original computational capacity and camera resolution limitations prevent it from safely running the large neural networks required for Robotaxi operations, making unsupervised FSD impossible on this platform. The company is currently developing a hardware upgrade solution, tentatively named “AI4” or “AI4-plus,” which may eventually be offered as a physical retrofit service for existing owners who desire it. Additionally, during Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk mentioned that the company will offer HW3 owners an option to upgrade their cameras or receive an extra discount when trading in their vehicles for a new purchase. Since the release of FSD v12.6.4 in early 2025, HW3 vehicles have gone over a year without receiving new FSD updates; V14 Lite is intended to fill this gap. The exact rollout timing for international markets remains undetermined, pending technical validation, regional adaptation, and regulatory approvals.
