Global vehicle sales totaled 22.4 million units in the first quarter of 2026 (January–March), down 2% year-over-year, with March sales alone reaching 8.58 million units, a 3% decline compared to the same month last year. During the same period, China accounted for 31.5% of global vehicle sales. Data shows that China’s share of the global automotive market has been steadily rising since 2020—reaching 33.8% in 2023, climbing to 34.2% in 2024, and further increasing to 35.4% in 2025—before experiencing a slight dip in Q1 2026. This decline is attributed to seasonal fluctuations caused by the Chinese New Year holiday. In the first quarter of 2026, two Chinese automakers ranked among the world’s top ten by sales volume: Geely placed sixth and Chery tenth, while BYD dropped to eleventh place. Meanwhile, most leading international automakers saw their global market shares decline during the same period, partly due to challenges associated with their transition toward electrification. Additionally, total global vehicle sales in 2025 reached 96.89 million units, up 6% year-over-year.
