Since its launch nearly a decade ago, General Motors' Super Cruise driver-assistance system has accumulated 1.6 billion kilometers (1 billion miles) of hands-free driving. Over the past year alone, users completed 28.7 million trips using the system. Currently, approximately 750,000 GM vehicles in North America are equipped with Super Cruise, spanning 23 different models. The system first debuted in 2017 on the 2018 Cadillac CT6 and has since expanded to select Chevrolet and GMC models. It was introduced on the Chevrolet Bolt and Hummer EV in 2022, and Buick models began offering Super Cruise starting in 2025. Super Cruise is currently classified as a Level 2 driver-assistance system, enabling hands-free driving on certain highway segments while requiring drivers to remain attentive and ready to take control at any time. GM plans to introduce Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities first on the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, allowing drivers to engage in non-driving-related activities under specific conditions. The new system will incorporate technological expertise from Cruise, the autonomous ride-hailing company acquired by GM in early 2025. GM is already testing its next-generation system on public roads in Michigan and California, with more than 200 development vehicles involved. The company is also developing an alert system to prompt drivers to resume control when needed. Currently, Super Cruise supports hands-free highway driving at speeds up to approximately 113 km/h (70 mph)—significantly higher than the roughly 64 km/h (40 mph) speed limit imposed on Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot system in Nevada and California for S-Class vehicles.
