Tesla's electric Semi truck entered a new phase of mass production on April 30 local time, with the first vehicle rolling off the mass-production line at its Nevada factory. The model was initially unveiled in November 2017 and began customer deliveries in December 2022. Tesla shared images of the first mass-produced Semi via social media, announcing the start of volume production. Its official Weibo account also confirmed this milestone on the same day. In January 2023, Tesla announced a $3.6 billion investment to build a dedicated high-volume Semi production facility and a 4680 battery cell factory in Nevada. Construction of the Semi plant began in the first quarter of 2024 and, as of October 2023, was nearing completion—with exterior work largely finished and efforts shifting toward interior fit-out and equipment installation. The Semi factory spans approximately 157,900 square meters (1.7 million square feet) and is located adjacent to the 4680 battery facility, enabling streamlined battery supply. The plant is designed for an annual production capacity of 50,000 units. With mass production now underway, both output and deliveries of the Semi are expected to increase significantly. Analysts project that 2024 deliveries will range between 5,000 and 15,000 units. Earlier, in its Q1 2024 earnings report, Tesla revealed that trial production had already commenced at the Nevada Semi factory and released real-world images of vehicles on the assembly line.
