Nissan Motor has completed prototype testing of its automotive all-solid-state battery on a pilot production line at its Yokohama plant. The battery consists of 23 stacked cells and achieves an energy density of 400–500 Wh/kg, enabling it to charge to 80% capacity in just 10 minutes. The company plans to finalize the number of cell layers by 2026 and aims to begin mass production by 2028. Currently, manufacturing costs for all-solid-state batteries remain extremely high; according to Nissan’s internal estimates, the battery for a single vehicle costs approximately 100 million yen (about RMB 4.34 million). This high cost is primarily due to solid electrolyte raw materials still being produced only at laboratory scale, with no established large-scale supply chain yet in place. Even if mass production begins in 2028, initial units are expected to be prioritized for high-performance or limited-edition flagship models.
