Beijing to Boost 2026 NEV Quotas to 160,000 as Holiday Sales Surge

In 2026, Beijing will allocate a total of 160,000 new energy passenger vehicle license quotas, comprising 80,000 regular quotas and an additional 80,000 supplementary quotas. All quotas will be allocated and results announced in a single round on May 26. Influenced by this policy and factors such as rising fuel prices, during the May Day holiday in 2024, numerous new energy vehicle (NEV) dealerships across Beijing saw significant increases in both foot traffic and order volumes. Some stores reported daily orders averaging seven to eight—higher than usual levels. Many consumers opted to place orders in advance and would decide whether to take delivery only after the quota results were released; if they failed to secure a quota, they could cancel or transfer their orders. In 2024, Beijing allocated 119,200 NEV quotas for families and 34,800 for individuals. Industry insiders estimate that the minimum qualifying score for family applicants will likely range between 36 and 38 points. Already, many families with scores above 34 have placed advance vehicle reservations. Reporters visiting multiple NEV dealerships in Haidian and Shijingshan districts observed steady customer flow, frequent use of test-drive vehicles, and even waiting lines at some stores. In contrast, dealerships primarily selling gasoline-powered vehicles experienced notably lower foot traffic, with sales staff noting that only 20,000 gasoline vehicle quotas are available and operating costs remain relatively high. Additionally, some consumers who attended the Beijing Auto Show were invited to dealerships afterward for further purchase discussions, while many families used the holiday period to intensively view and compare vehicles. Brands such as Li Auto and Changan Deepal reported markedly higher delivery volumes during the holiday, with some delivery centers expecting over 20 vehicles awaiting handover on a single day.
