Recently, reports have emerged that some new energy vehicle manufacturers have secretly modified battery management system parameters under the guise of OTA (over-the-air) updates, thereby reducing vehicles' fast-charging capabilities and limiting usable battery capacity. Such actions can conceal underlying safety issues—such as poor battery cell consistency and thermal management deficiencies—to minimize recall risks and delay visible signs of battery degradation, thus lowering warranty-related costs. To date, regulators have summoned eight automakers for discussions, with three formally placed under investigation for suspected violations. The identities of these companies have not yet been disclosed. The revelations have sparked widespread concern and dissatisfaction among vehicle owners, prompting several leading new energy vehicle brands to swiftly issue statements clarifying they were not involved in such practices. Meanwhile, the relevant regulatory investigations are ongoing, and their outcomes are expected to significantly impact industry standards and consumer protection measures.
