General Motors has filed a patent application for a "Reconfigurable Screen System," patent number US 2026/0326553 A1. The application was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 22, 2025, and was officially published on October 22, 2026. The inventors are Joseph F. Szczerba, Ki Hyun Ahn, and Roy J. Mathieu. The patent describes a dashboard system equipped with movable screens that can be positioned independently or combined into a continuous display area. The system includes an instrument cluster display and an infotainment screen, with some versions adding a passenger-side display, which may be a personal device such as a tablet. In one example, the instrument cluster display includes two display surfaces capable of presenting images or video, with the side surface initially facing the driver and the main display surface hidden inside the dashboard; the display can then rotate to reveal the main display surface while moving the side surface out of the driver's view. An electric motor performs the position adjustments. The mechanical structures described include a pivot shaft for rotating the screen, as well as sliding mechanisms implemented using lead screws, gears, belts, or linear motors, with some versions allowing the screen to move along rails. A controller selects the adjustment method based on preset preferences, the user's past operation history, commands, the currently selected application, or vehicle driving state, and users can input personal preferences through a mobile application or the in-vehicle system. The control flow supports recording the user's operational needs via machine learning algorithms and adjusting accordingly, and the screen position can change automatically based on direct user commands, the selected application, or vehicle driving state.
