In December 2025, Australia sold a total of 16,303 electric passenger vehicles (including 10,384 battery electric vehicles and 5,919 plug-in hybrids), accounting for 16.7% of the month’s total passenger vehicle sales—a record high. For the full year, cumulative electric vehicle (EV) sales reached 103,269 units, representing 8.3% of annual passenger vehicle sales. Despite over 100 EV models available in the market, the segment’s market share increased by only 1.1 percentage points throughout the year. By year-end, the country’s total EV fleet surpassed 400,000 units. BYD delivered standout performance: its Atto 2 ranked fourth in sales just two months after launch, and the brand’s annual sales surged by more than 150% year-over-year, securing a spot among the top ten best-selling brands for the year. Chinese brands dominated the EV sales rankings, occupying eight of the top ten positions, with newcomers like Deepal, Leapmotor, and Zeekr accelerating their market expansion. Electric pickups emerged as a new hotspot, led by the BYD Shark PHEV. Meanwhile, traditional internal combustion engine models such as the RAV4 and HiLux saw declining sales, underscoring the deepening shift toward electrification.
