According to South Korean media outlet The Elec, Samsung Electronics' System LSI division has completed the design of a 5G automotive modem specifically developed for Tesla electric vehicles and has now entered the testing phase. Mass production and supply are expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The chip will initially be integrated into Tesla’s upcoming Robotaxi autonomous vehicle. The project, which began in 2024, involves Samsung handling the modem chip design, while module manufacturing is being carried out by external partners. Due to the stringent reliability and durability requirements for automotive-grade components, Samsung implemented an independent development process for this project. Previously, Tesla had long relied on Qualcomm modems; this collaboration with Samsung will help reduce its dependence on a single supplier.
