Colorado Springs Police Roll Out Auto-Speeding System, Issuing 12 Tickets Per Hour

Police in Colorado Springs, Colorado, have recently equipped two Jeep Grand Cherokee patrol vehicles with Automatic Vehicle Identification Systems (AVIS) to enable mobile speed enforcement. The system automatically identifies speeding vehicles in key areas such as school zones, parks, construction sites, and residential neighborhoods, issuing citations only when a vehicle exceeds the speed limit by 11 mph (approximately 18 km/h) or more. Fines are $40 on regular roads but double to $80 in school or construction zones. According to police, the system can issue up to 12 tickets per hour, and its operational costs are fully covered by fine revenue, resulting in "zero cost" to taxpayers. Although the system has not yet been deployed citywide, the vehicles will conduct enforcement across different areas on a rotating basis. Its actual effectiveness still requires further data validation.
