BMW has officially eliminated the long-standing iDrive physical rotary controller in its all-new iX3, drawing widespread attention. As the second-generation all-electric SUV, the iX3 features the latest iDrive X system, fully transitioning to touch and voice controls—a design approach BMW plans to roll out across its entire new vehicle lineup. The company stated it has received no complaints from owners regarding this change and emphasized that the new system is more advanced and intuitive. The iX3 comes equipped with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a “Panoramic Vision” head-up display projected at the base of the windshield, and an optional 3D head-up display. A passenger-side screen is not included for now. The steering wheel now serves as the primary physical interface, while climate controls have also been moved to the touchscreen. BMW has further integrated the Alexa+ voice assistant, supporting multi-command recognition. While brands like Volkswagen have reverted certain designs due to over-simplification, BMW remains committed to its “buttonless” philosophy, stating there is no possibility of bringing back the rotary knob. The new iX3 will begin deliveries in Europe this spring and arrive in the U.S. this summer.
