Mazda has again delayed the launch of its first vehicle based on its self-developed scalable EV platform, with the earliest possible debut now pushed back to 2028. Originally scheduled for unveiling in 2025 and later postponed to 2027, the launch has now been delayed once more. Currently, Mazda’s all-electric models on sale—the EZ-6 and EZ-60—are built on Changan Automobile’s EPA1 platform rather than Mazda’s own architecture. Christian Schultze, Mazda’s senior R&D executive in Europe, stated that rapid advancements in EV technology, along with constraints in resources and talent, have made independent platform development challenging. As a result, Mazda has opted to leverage partner platforms during this transitional period while steadily advancing its in-house development efforts. The new platform is expected to support multiple vehicle sizes in the future and will compete with architectures like Volkswagen’s MEB or Volvo’s SPA3, aiming to deliver products with stronger long-term competitiveness.
