In 2025, China’s automobile production and sales both reached record highs, hitting 34.531 million units and 34.4 million units respectively—an increase of 10.4% and 9.4% year-on-year—marking the third consecutive year exceeding the 30-million-unit milestone. This performance significantly surpassed the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers’ (CAAM) earlier forecast of approximately 3% sales growth. Supportive government policies and a rebound in market demand were the primary drivers behind this surge. New energy vehicles (NEVs) stood out particularly, with annual production and sales reaching 8.5 million and 8.4 million units respectively—a remarkable year-on-year jump of 47.3% and 45.6%—raising their market share to 24.7%. Breaking down the NEV segment, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded production and sales of 6.7 million and 6.6 million units respectively, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) each reached 1.8 million units, growing by 54.6% and 26.1% respectively. China’s NEVs are not only expanding steadily in the domestic market but also demonstrating significantly enhanced competitiveness overseas.
