Mercedes-Benz has announced a strategic shift in its autonomous driving approach, scrapping Level 3 (L3) autonomous driving functionality from its new vehicle models. Although its DrivePilot system was the world’s first mass-produced L3 system certified in both Germany and the United States, stringent operational conditions—such as requiring a lead vehicle, prohibiting use at night or in adverse weather—combined with low customer willingness to pay and minimal real-world usage, have led to this decision. Additionally, the legal liability borne by automakers during L3 operation has created significant compliance and cost pressures. As a result, Mercedes-Benz is pivoting toward more cost-effective advanced driver-assistance systems. The company is currently collaborating with Chinese firm Momenta to develop Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) and using NVIDIA’s algorithms in the U.S. market to compete directly with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system.
