In 2025, Chongqing’s automotive industry made a strong comeback, producing 2.788 million vehicles—up 9.7% year-on-year—ranking first among Chinese cities and third among provinces and municipalities nationwide. Of this total, 1.296 million were new energy vehicles (NEVs), surging 36% year-on-year and driving the city’s automotive industrial cluster to exceed RMB 800 billion in scale. Although major automotive hubs like Beijing and Shanghai have yet to release their full-year figures, Chongqing has already secured its position as China’s top automotive city for the year, based on January–November production data (Shanghai: 1.6011 million units; Beijing: 1.335 million units) and broader industry trends. This marks Chongqing’s return to the top spot after a nine-year gap, following its previous reign from 2014 to 2016. Behind this achievement are two key automakers: Changan Automobile, which celebrated its 30-millionth vehicle rollout, and Seres, whose AITO brand reached its one-millionth vehicle production milestone at its Liangjiang New Area plant in Chongqing.
