Recently, the Ministry of Emergency Management reported a fatal accident involving a new energy vehicle (NEV) caused by complete battery depletion. The driver, surnamed Lin, knowingly drove onto the highway despite having only about 80 kilometers of remaining range, ignoring passengers’ suggestions to charge the vehicle first. During the journey, the vehicle passed two service areas, and passengers repeatedly urged Lin to stop and recharge, but he disregarded all warnings. Approximately 500 meters before reaching the third service area, the vehicle lost power and stopped in the slow lane. While Lin and one passenger were pushing the car, they were struck from behind by a truck, resulting in both fatalities and damage to both vehicles. The incident highlights the driver’s reckless complacency and disregard for safety risks. The emergency management authorities reminded drivers: before taking an NEV onto the highway, always check the battery level, plan your route and charging stops accordingly, and never linger on or push your vehicle along highway lanes to avoid severe accidents.
