Volkswagen has officially launched its first range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), the ID. ERA 9X, marking a full-scale entry into the segment by the German automotive giant—once dismissive of range extension as merely a "transitional solution." The new model features a highly efficient range extender derived from the EA211 1.5T engine, paired with a 65.2 kWh battery pack, delivering over 400 km of pure electric CLTC range and a combined range of up to 1,600 km. Its fuel consumption in low-battery conditions is an impressive 6.27 L/100 km. Chassis-wise, the ID. ERA 9X adopts a front double-wishbone and rear five-link suspension setup, complemented by air suspension, CDC (Continuous Damping Control), and rear-wheel steering—all previously reserved for higher-end models. On the intelligent driving front, Volkswagen has partnered with Momenta to integrate LiDAR sensors and the R7 World Model, achieving autonomous driving capabilities comparable to those powered by NVIDIA’s Thor chip. Inside the cabin, occupants are treated to large displays for both front and rear passengers, a “Magic Screen” wood-grain digital instrument panel, and three zero-gravity seats featuring enhanced safety designs. The vehicle also debuts Volkswagen’s “Wanfeng” climate system, which softens airflow for improved comfort. Volkswagen stresses that this move isn’t mere trend-following—it’s a redefinition of range-extended EVs through a distinctly German engineering philosophy.
