The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is expanding its investigation into Tesla's "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" system, focusing on its performance in low-visibility adverse weather conditions. Although the system requires drivers to continuously monitor road conditions, regulators have confirmed multiple crashes—including one fatal incident—in which vehicles failed to provide adequate warnings to drivers when encountering situations such as intense glare, heavy fog, or dust clouds. NHTSA launched this investigation in 2024 to assess whether the FSD system’s responses in these complex environments are reasonable. The upgraded probe reflects ongoing U.S. concerns about the safety of Tesla’s driver-assistance systems.
