Researchers at the University of Arkansas have published new findings in the journal *Small*, demonstrating that applying a nanoscale zirconium sulfide coating onto the surface of NMC811 cathode materials via atomic layer deposition significantly enhances lithium-ion battery performance. While NMC811 offers advantages of high energy density and low cost, it tends to release oxygen during charge-discharge cycling, leading to electrolyte oxidation, gas generation, and even fire hazards. The newly developed coating effectively suppresses oxygen release, minimizes side reactions, and enables the battery to achieve over 1,000 cycles—offering a promising new approach to addressing range anxiety and safety concerns in electric vehicles.
