Li Auto’s product line head, Tang Jing, recently explained that the company’s newly developed native Extended-Range 3.0 system features a significantly optimized dimensional layout—reduced in the X and Y directions while increased in the Z direction—to free up more interior space. This design logic is inherently well-suited for SUVs, as their taller body allows the range extender to be mounted higher. However, for sedans, the limited front-end height poses a challenge: mounting the range extender too high would encroach on the crumple zone required for pedestrian protection, violating safety regulations. Tang emphasized that this range extender was custom-designed specifically for Li Auto’s L-series SUVs and is not a universal solution, making it difficult to adapt to sedan platforms. This approach reflects Li Auto’s strategy of fine-tuning spatial and safety considerations according to the distinct characteristics of different vehicle types in its powertrain development.
