Mazda is considering launching a more off-road-oriented version of its best-selling SUV, the CX-5. Although no development plans have been confirmed yet, Koichiro Yamaguchi, CX-5 project manager for the 2026 model year, stated in an interview that the company closely monitors customer feedback and would not rule out introducing a "soft off-roader" similar to rival models if market demand proves sufficient. He noted that the current CX-5’s advanced all-wheel-drive system already provides a solid foundation. Competing models such as the Honda CR-V TrailSport and Toyota RAV4 Woodland already offer outdoor-themed variants, primarily enhancing light off-road capability and rugged styling through features like added body cladding and slightly raised suspension. In 2025, the CX-5 sold over 136,000 units in the U.S. and has surpassed 5 million units in global cumulative sales, making it Mazda’s most successful SUV. This potential move could further broaden its customer base.
