Tesla has recently published a new patent titled "Integrated Range Extender System for Electric Vehicles" (US 2026/0048683 A1), proposing an auxiliary battery pack integrated into a trailer that connects to the main vehicle via a high-voltage interface—enabling range extension without occupying cargo bed space. The system combines an 800V main battery with a 400V auxiliary battery and supports three operating modes: state-of-charge balancing, voltage matching, and parallel fast charging (at rates exceeding 500 kW). The trailer-mounted battery can also be trickle-charged via MC4 connectors linked to solar panels and utilizes waste heat from its DC/DC converter to preheat the battery, addressing performance issues in cold temperatures. Although Tesla previously canceled its Cybertruck bed-mounted range extender, this patent indicates the company is still exploring more flexible range-extension solutions. It should be noted that patent filings do not guarantee mass production, and the commercialization of this technology remains uncertain.
