A female user recently exposed on TikTok that she was quoted $293 at Pep Boys to replace a broken taillight, with the justification that it required removing the rear bumper and would take 90 minutes. However, she later found a tutorial on YouTube and easily completed the replacement herself using just a butter knife—simply unplugging the old light and plugging in the new one. In her video, she angrily denounced the charge as "shameless predatory pricing." Her experience is far from unique: according to a 2025 industry report, 93% of vehicle owners who used DIY diagnostic tools avoided unnecessary repair costs as a result. Experts note that as vehicles age and repair costs rise, more consumers are choosing to learn auto repairs themselves. Although some insurance policies require professional taillight replacement, for most vehicle models, this task is actually a basic procedure that owners can perform on their own. Pep Boys has not yet responded to the incident.
