On March 31, Toyota Motor Corporation announced it will join cellcentric, a fuel cell joint venture established by Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group. The three companies have signed a non-binding agreement to collaborate as equal shareholders. Toyota will become the third shareholder in cellcentric, focusing on the development and production of fuel cell units and their control systems. Leveraging Daimler’s and Volvo’s extensive experience in commercial vehicles and Toyota’s more than 30 years of fuel cell technology expertise, the partnership aims to develop market-competitive fuel cell systems for heavy-duty on-road and off-road transportation equipment and accelerate their commercialization. Additionally, the partners will work with industry stakeholders to support the development of hydrogen infrastructure. All three companies view hydrogen as a critical pathway to decarbonizing transportation, emphasizing that fuel cell and battery-electric technologies are complementary and essential to achieving net-zero emissions goals.
