According to foreign media reports, Jean-Dominique Senard, Chairman of the Renault Group, will formally step down upon the conclusion of his term in spring 2027 and will not seek reappointment. The 73-year-old Senard has served as Renault’s chairman since January 2019. His second four-year term began in 2023 and will end following Renault’s annual general meeting—typically held in April or May—of 2027. Senard assumed the role during a crisis, stepping in after Carlos Ghosn, Renault’s former chairman, was arrested in Japan in 2018 over alleged financial misconduct. Nominated by the French government, Senard transitioned from his executive position at Michelin to take on the critical task of stabilizing the Renault Group. During his tenure, he actively worked to repair and maintain Renault’s alliance with Nissan, making multiple trips to Japan in the months following the Ghosn affair to reassure Nissan’s management of Renault’s continued commitment to their partnership. Additionally, Senard spearheaded merger negotiations between Renault and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Although the deal ultimately collapsed at the final stage, it was widely seen as a significant attempt by Senard to drive industry consolidation. FCA subsequently merged with Groupe PSA to form today’s Stellantis. Under Senard’s leadership, Renault gradually regained stability. In 2020, Luca de Meo, formerly of Volkswagen Group, succeeded Thierry Bollore as CEO of Renault and led the company’s strategic transformation. In 2025, de Meo departed to join luxury conglomerate Kering, and his role was taken over by François Provost, previously head of Renault’s cooperative business activities. With his planned departure in 2027 now confirmed, Senard’s nearly eight-year chairmanship will officially come to an end, paving the way for Renault’s next phase of leadership transition.
