Nissan plans to launch an all-new Xterra in 2028, featuring a body-on-frame construction and positioned as a rugged off-road SUV. According to Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s Head of Product Planning for the U.S., the new model will be offered in two powertrain variants: one powered by a pure internal combustion engine (ICE) V6, and another hybrid V6 derived from the same ICE platform. Nissan has explicitly stated that it will not offer an all-electric version or a manual transmission option for the Xterra; all variants will come exclusively with an automatic transmission. While the specific V6 engine has not yet been confirmed, it is likely to be chosen between the current 3.8-liter naturally aspirated unit (used in the Frontier pickup) and the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine (found in the Z sports car and Infiniti Q50). The company emphasized its commitment to retaining a pure gasoline-powered variant to meet the needs of customers who prioritize simplicity and durability.
