Buyer Denied Warranty Over 3-Mile Limit, Pays $20,000 for Repairs

A Texas-based construction contractor, Joseph Szpak, purchased a 2020 GMC Yukon XL through Carvana. Approximately three months after the purchase, the vehicle’s engine failed. Szpak stated that although he had exceeded Carvana’s 4,000-mile basic warranty limit by just three miles, the failure occurred within the 100-day coverage period. Szpak said he had separately purchased an extended warranty from SilverRock, which should have covered the roughly $14,000 cost of a new engine and four weeks of rental car expenses. However, SilverRock denied his claim, citing the three-mile excess over the mileage limit. He described being caught in a cycle of finger-pointing: Carvana claimed it was no longer responsible since the vehicle had already been sold; his lender, Bridgecrest Acceptance Corporation, insisted he continue making payments or face default; and SilverRock consistently refused to honor the warranty. Because his job requires frequent travel, Szpak ultimately paid approximately $20,000 out of pocket for repairs—including replacing the long-block engine, having it installed at a shop within the warranty network, and covering rental car costs—after receiving no resolution on his claim. He still owes about $40,000 on his auto loan and continues to be charged for the extended warranty, even though it never provided coverage. SilverRock is owned by Turnbridge Equities. Szpak is now considering legal action to recover part of his expenses. As of publication, neither Carvana nor Turnbridge Equities had responded to requests for comment.
