Volkswagen Group is planning to discontinue Audi’s inline-five engines in Europe due to stricter emissions regulations, but reports suggesting the imminent discontinuation of its smallest-displacement engine are inaccurate. Stefan Voswinkel, Head of Product Communications at Volkswagen Group, confirmed that the company has not abandoned the EA211-series 1.0-liter inline-three engine. Development of this engine was temporarily paused following the European Union’s initial draft of the Euro 7 emissions standards, but resumed after the EU adopted relatively more lenient regulations, allowing its continued use. Currently, mainstream brands under the Volkswagen Group have gradually phased out three-cylinder engines from their compact models. For many years, entry-level versions of the Volkswagen Golf, Škoda Octavia, SEAT León, and Audi A3 offered this powertrain, but it is now only available in smaller vehicles such as the Polo, Fabia, Ibiza, and the soon-to-be-discontinued Audi A1. In the compact car segment, the group has replaced three-cylinder units with a detuned 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 114 horsepower, while higher-performance variants offer 148 horsepower. Transversely mounted premium models use variously tuned versions of the 2.0-liter EA888 engine, with outputs reaching up to 329 horsepower (as in the Golf R). Although all the aforementioned powertrains are turbocharged, naturally aspirated options remain available in certain markets: the base Škoda Fabia features a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated engine delivering 79 horsepower, while turbocharged three-cylinder variants produce either 94 or 114 horsepower depending on the model and trim level.
