Austin Self-Driving Car Kills Nesting Duck, Sparking Resident Concerns

A duck nesting in a planter outside an Italian restaurant in the Mueller Lake enclave of Austin, Texas, was run over and killed by an Avride autonomous test vehicle operating in self-driving mode. Although a safety operator was present inside the vehicle at the time, it neither stopped nor slowed down. The incident was first disclosed by a local resident in a Mueller neighborhood Facebook group and subsequently reported by local media, sparking concern and frustration among nearby residents about the operation of autonomous vehicles in the area. The duck was well-known to local residents, and its death has intensified public skepticism about the safety of autonomous driving technology. Some community members have already moved the remaining eggs from the nest into an incubator to ensure they hatch successfully. Avride spokesperson Yulia Shvets confirmed that the vehicle was indeed in autonomous mode at the time of the incident. While the company has not halted all public road testing, it has adjusted its operational boundaries, prohibiting vehicles from entering certain roads near the Mueller Lake neighborhood. In response to residents’ claims that the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign, Avride stated that after reviewing vehicle data, it found no evidence of traffic violations, asserting that the vehicle properly came to a complete stop at all relevant stop signs. The company has since reconstructed the incident using recorded data and multiple simulations and is evaluating potential upgrades to its technology—including conducting controlled experiments in simulated environments—to prevent similar incidents in the future while ensuring safety performance remains unaffected in other scenarios. In addition to Avride, companies such as Zoox, Tesla, Waymo, and Uber are also conducting autonomous vehicle testing or commercial operations in Austin.
