Li Auto and Dongfeng Nissan Clash Over NX8 Pricing

From:Internet Info Agency 2026-04-14 07:40:00

On April 8, 2025, Dongfeng Nissan launched its mid-to-large new energy SUV, the NX8, with a limited-time starting price of RMB 149,900—significantly lower than the market’s prior expectation of around RMB 200,000. The NX8 features a wheelbase of 2,917 mm and comes standard across all trims with 71 configurations, including an 800V ultra-fast charging system, a LiDAR-based intelligent driving system, and Qualcomm’s SA8295P chip, positioning it squarely in the RMB 150,000–200,000 price segment. Li Xiang, founder of Li Auto, quickly voiced strong dissatisfaction, ostensibly criticizing online trolls but implicitly revealing his anxiety over intensifying competition in the family SUV market. Li Auto had previously dominated the RMB 250,000–450,000 family SUV segment, but its competitive edge is now eroding as brands like Leapmotor introduce lower-priced alternatives and Dongfeng Nissan enters the RMB 150,000 tier with the NX8. Within just one year, Dongfeng Nissan has rolled out three dedicated new energy models—N7, N6, and NX8—spanning both BEV and range-extended powertrains to build a comprehensive product matrix targeting family users. The company has also markedly improved internal decision-making efficiency: the NX8 launch event was condensed to just 30 minutes and featured unconventional communication tactics, such as directly announcing pricing and having executives engage in group media interviews. The NX8 garnered 8,423 orders within 30 minutes of its debut. However, Dongfeng Nissan’s earlier N7 and N6 models experienced sharp sales declines after initial launches, leading the market to question whether the brand can sustain long-term competitiveness. Currently, the RMB 150,000–200,000 family SUV segment remains dominated by ICE vehicles, which held a retail penetration rate of 58.9% in January–February 2026. To succeed, the NX8 must simultaneously capture mindshare from both ICE and new energy vehicle buyers. The NX8 competes not only against joint-venture ICE SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 but also domestic new energy rivals such as the Aito M6 and Li Auto L6. Its ultimate success hinges not just on product strength but also on production ramp-up, delivery reliability, after-sales service, and software iteration capabilities. As more joint-venture brands accelerate their electrification strategies, the true test for the NX8 will emerge roughly six months after its launch.
