It has been two years since Audi discontinued the R8. Although the brand has approved development of a new high-performance model, the all-electric C Concept set to debut next year is not the official successor to the R8. According to Michaela Hilbert, Managing Director of Audi Sport, should the R8 project ever be revived in the future, it must meet two core conditions: first, it must adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain to comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations; second, the model must demonstrate commercial viability. Given the limited sales volume typical of supercars, developing an entirely new internal combustion engine (ICE) solely for the R8 that meets current emissions standards would be economically unfeasible. Hilbert noted that consumer acceptance of hybrid supercars is growing, as hybrid systems can preserve the driving experience of an ICE while offering pure electric driving capability. Audi has already implemented plug-in hybrid technology in high-performance models like the RS5, and the upcoming RS6 will feature a similar powertrain solution. Moreover, Hilbert emphasized that under today’s high R&D costs and strict regulatory environment, any new vehicle must achieve reasonable profitability—brand prestige alone is no longer sufficient to justify a project. Therefore, if the R8 were to return, the most viable approach would be to collaborate once again with Lamborghini, reviving the platform-sharing strategy used during the Gallardo and Huracán eras. However, Lamborghini’s newly launched Temerario was developed independently, and there are currently no plans to share its platform with Audi. While Hilbert did not completely rule out a potential R8 revival, she clarified that rumors about a 2027 relaunch are purely speculative and explicitly stated that the car will not appear in 2025. For now, Audi is prioritizing key models such as the next-generation Q7, the debut Q9 SUV, and the entry-level all-electric A2. Launching a dedicated high-performance sports car in the near term is therefore unrealistic. Instead, the brand is focusing on its core product lines and plans to reinvigorate its sporty image through a new roadster.
