Nissan has confirmed that it will discontinue the Altima (known as the Teana in China) in overseas markets. This decision stems from the company’s “Intelligent Mobility for Everyday Life” strategy announced earlier this year, which entails phasing out 11 underperforming models to concentrate resources on segments with greater growth potential. Ivan Espinosa, Nissan Americas’ Chief Product and Planning Officer, revealed that the discontinued models include the Altima and the Rogue (X-Trail) plug-in hybrid variant. The Teana/Altima has been part of Nissan’s lineup for 34 years, but its sales have steadily declined. In the U.S., annual sales exceeded 200,000 units in 2019, dropped to 92,809 units in 2023, and further fell to just 42,288 units in the first half of 2024—a 31.9% year-over-year decline. Full-year 2024 sales are projected to reach approximately 84,600 units. By comparison, the Sylphy sold 75,549 units during the same period—down 11.7% year-over-year but still significantly outpacing the Altima. Espinosa stated that the newly updated Sylphy, positioned as a more “mature” sedan, will absorb Nissan’s remaining sedan market demand. Additionally, the Rogue plug-in hybrid will also be discontinued. This model was essentially a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, introduced primarily to quickly offer a hybrid option and gauge market response. Espinosa noted that its mission has been accomplished and that it will be succeeded by the new Rogue e-POWER, which will feature competitive pricing and strong fuel efficiency. He also hinted that Nissan may launch a three-row SUV in the future, while Infiniti could offer both two-row and three-row versions, available with either conventional or hybrid powertrains.
