Nissan recently confirmed it will discontinue the base LEAF S trim of the third-generation Nissan LEAF in the U.S. market starting in 2026. The LEAF S is equipped with a 52 kWh battery and a 174-horsepower electric motor, offering less range than the higher-end LEAF S+ variant, which features a 75 kWh battery, 214 horsepower, and an EPA-estimated range of 303 miles. Nissan stated the decision stems from a comprehensive assessment of market trends, consumer preferences, and the competitive EV landscape, aiming to concentrate resources on higher-value products. Although the LEAF S was poised to become the most affordable new electric vehicle in the U.S., its shorter range was deemed misaligned with local customer expectations. Currently, the LEAF S+ starts at $29,990 (approximately RMB 207,000).
