BMW is negotiating with the European Commission to secure a tariff exemption for its China-made electric MINI models, proposing to replace the current 20.7% tariff with a minimum import price. This move follows a similar agreement recently reached between Volkswagen Group and the EU, reflecting a growing trend of enhanced cooperation between EU authorities and Chinese automakers in the electric vehicle sector. Currently, BMW’s China-produced electric MINI Cooper and Aceman models are subject to high additional tariffs imposed following the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation concluded in late October 2024. If successful, the negotiations could grant zero-tariff treatment to electric MINIs and potentially encourage more Chinese EV manufacturers to pursue tariff exemptions from the EU.
