Dodge CEO Says Brand Still Considering Affordable Performance Car

During the New York Auto Show, Dodge CEO Matt McAlear stated that there remains strong market demand for affordable performance vehicles. Currently, aside from a few models such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Toyota GR86, and Subaru BRZ, American consumers have very limited options when it comes to budget-friendly cars offering driving enjoyment. While McAlear did not confirm specific vehicle plans, he clearly indicated that customers want Dodge to offer more accessible alternatives compared to its current lineup. He previously mentioned in February that the brand is considering launching a performance car priced under $30,000 and emphasized Dodge’s commitment to reinforcing its identity as “America’s performance brand.” At present, Dodge’s most affordable performance model is the two-door Charger, which starts above $50,000—well beyond what most consumers consider “affordable.” Reviving historic nameplates like the Neon or drawing inspiration from past concepts such as the 2002 Razor or 2007 Demon—which combined lightweight bodies with four-cylinder engines—could potentially meet today’s market demands. Possible directions include developing a sporty sedan akin to the Honda Civic Si or Hyundai Elantra N, or directly competing with the Miata and GR86 through a lightweight two-door sports car. Although no official project has been announced yet, McAlear’s comments suggest the idea is actively being explored internally.
