BYD is expanding its battery production capacity in Brazil and plans to invest approximately $100 million in building energy storage systems (ESS) to support Brazil's national power grid. Alexandre Baldy, Senior Vice President of BYD Brazil, stated that this expansion is part of the company’s localization strategy, aiming to achieve a 50% local content ratio for vehicles produced in Brazil by early 2027. To comply with local regulatory requirements and reduce tax costs, BYD’s main factory in Camaçari, Bahia, is increasing its proportion of locally sourced components. The facility has a total investment of R$5.5 billion and includes a newly launched passenger vehicle battery production line. Additionally, the company will invest between R$50 million and R$60 million to expand its dedicated bus battery production line. BYD also plans to invest up to R$500 million to build a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) production line, addressing the issue of wind and solar power plants in Brazil being forced to curtail output due to insufficient grid integration capacity. Site selection for the related energy storage projects is expected to be finalized within the next 90 days, potentially located either at the company’s existing bus battery plant in Manaus or at a newly constructed facility. Currently, BYD ranks among the top five best-selling automotive brands in Brazil and aims to become the country’s top-selling brand by 2030. Although the company has secured mining rights in lithium-rich regions of Brazil, it has no immediate development plans due to weak lithium prices. Its current focus remains on optimizing operations at its passenger vehicle plant and expanding electric bus production capacity.
