The recall stems from a manufacturing process variation in the front air springs of certain vehicles, which may reduce airtightness. After prolonged use in high-temperature, high-humidity environments, this could lead to slow air leakage and trigger a fault warning. In extreme cases, vehicle handling may be affected. The recall follows a surge of owner complaints in early July 2024: multiple reports described air suspension warnings, audible air leaks, and vehicle body sagging under hot weather conditions—severe enough to render the car immobile, commonly referred to as “lying flat.” Some owners noted that the issue persisted even after replacement of relevant components. XPeng had previously extended the warranty for the X9’s front air spring system to 8 years or 160,000 kilometers. This recall now includes a free replacement with an improved front air spring strut assembly. As of the end of June 2024, global deliveries of the X9 exceeded 60,000 units; the recalled volume represents roughly half of that figure (though the counting methodologies differ slightly). The X9 features a dual-chamber air suspension system with a plastic-welded top cap structure. Engineers indicate that air leaks may originate from welding defects or poor sealing at the junction between the rubber air bladder and the top cap. The system includes pressure sensors and an onboard compressor that automatically replenishes air when pressure drops. However, continuous leakage combined with high ambient temperatures may cause the compressor to overheat and shut down due to thermal protection, resulting in insufficient air reservoir pressure and an inability to maintain normal ride height. The vehicle employs an open-loop air supply system, which frequently draws in and compresses ambient air to approximately 18 bar—a process that imposes significant thermal load. Additionally, intelligent chassis functions such as welcome-height adjustment and automatic lowering at high speeds increase compressor cycling frequency, further exacerbating heat accumulation risks. Reports suggest that the X9’s air suspension system is supplied by Baolong Auto Parts, marking its first mass-produced application using plastic welding technology, though the supplier has not yet issued a public response. Another supplier, Konghui Technology, stated that its comparable products have not experienced batch air-leak issues. Industry analysts note that current vehicle development cycles have been drastically shortened—with some projects compressed to just 18 months—leading to reduced validation time and potentially insufficient exposure of long-term performance issues like sealing integrity and material aging. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) will implement new regulations in 2027 requiring new energy vehicles to complete corresponding reliability tests, and any novel technologies must also submit safety justification documentation. Chassis engineers emphasize that even in the event of component failure, the system should incorporate robust fault diagnostics and graceful degradation strategies—such as disabling non-essential adjustments, isolating faulty air circuits, and maintaining a minimum safe ride height—to prevent vehicles from becoming stranded roadside.
