On the evening of September 12, 2026, Tesla plans to introduce a suite of safety and collision-avoidance features in its next major Full Self-Driving (FSD) update, version 15. Earlier this week, a near-collision incident occurred in which a customer’s vehicle proactively steered to avoid another car exiting a parking lot. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, used this event to outline the safety enhancements planned for FSD v15. “FSD v15 will deliver earlier hazard prediction, faster reaction times, and significantly improved overall safety and collision-avoidance capabilities,” Elluswamy stated. Internally, v15 is regarded as an architectural upgrade, featuring a larger neural network and tighter integration between prediction and control systems. Tesla has begun testing early versions of the v15 software in select Robotaxi operations and is simultaneously rolling out safety features such as Automatic Collision Evasion to existing customer vehicles. The system can intervene autonomously when necessary, even if the driver is operating the vehicle manually. In April 2026, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that FSD v15 would be vastly safer than human drivers, even in fully unsupervised and complex scenarios. In August 2025, Musk noted that FSD v14 would already outperform human drivers, while v15 could achieve a tenfold improvement over human driving.
