At the start of 2026, China's premium automotive market has witnessed a surge in new flagship models bearing the "9" designation. According to the latest catalog released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), a wave of high-end vehicles named with “9” have debuted, including the NIO ES9, Zhiji V9, BYD Han 9/Tang 9, Leapmotor D19/D99, and SAIC-Volkswagen ID.ERA9X. These models typically exceed five meters in length and are priced predominantly between RMB 300,000 and RMB 500,000, with some even surpassing RMB 500,000, spanning sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. In China’s automotive naming conventions, the digit “9” signifies top-tier positioning, and brands are leveraging this symbolism to reshape their premium image. The NIO ES9 supports battery swapping; the Zhiji V9 features Huawei’s ADS Ultra autonomous driving system and HarmonyOS cockpit; BYD’s Han 9 and Tang 9 directly target flagship models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi (BBA); while Leapmotor’s D-series enters the RMB 300,000 luxury segment with high-compute chips and an 800V high-voltage platform. Even joint-venture brand Volkswagen is entering the “9-series” arena for the first time with its ID.ERA9X. Against the backdrop of Chinese brands already capturing over 80% of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market above RMB 300,000, automakers are collectively pushing further into the premium segment—not only to enhance brand value and pricing power but also to secure higher margins that can fund future technological investments. The year 2026 could thus mark a pivotal milestone in the premiumization journey of Chinese automotive brands.
