General Motors CEO Mary Barra recently stated that the company will not launch plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the U.S. market, primarily because most users do not regularly charge their vehicles—undermining the original design intent of PHEVs to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Although GM previously introduced the Chevrolet Equinox Plus PHEV in China, which boasts a combined range exceeding 965 kilometers, the model will not be sold in the United States. Barra emphasized that GM remains committed to its all-electric strategy, viewing it as the "endgame." Studies show that the actual proportion of all-electric driving in PHEVs is far lower than expected, with real-world fuel consumption 42% to 67% higher than official figures. Given the lack of policy incentives and insufficient consumer charging habits, GM has opted for a cautious approach, focusing its efforts on battery electric vehicles.
