Experts warn that on icy roads, once a semi-truck loses traction, its massive weight and momentum can easily cause it to "jackknife"—a dangerous folding motion that is extremely difficult to recover from. Unlike passenger cars, trucks that skid should never slam on the brakes or make sharp steering inputs, as these actions can worsen the loss of control. The American Trucking Associations emphasize drastically reducing speed in winter conditions, avoiding cruise control, and pulling over to wait if necessary.
