Amid an industry-wide trend of over-reliance on touchscreens, Kia has chosen to stick with physical buttons. While its latest models feature large displays, core functions such as climate control and media remain accessible via dedicated physical controls. Jochen Paesen, Head of Interior Design at Kia, stated, “Some functions must be operated quickly and accurately—there’s no room for error.” He criticized multi-layered menu systems as “unfriendly to everyone” and emphasized that functionality should prioritize practicality over blindly piling on tech features. While drawing inspiration from innovations by Chinese automakers, Kia places greater emphasis on striking a balance between technology and human-centered design. Now, other brands—including Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Škoda—are also returning to physical buttons, recognizing that touchscreen interfaces can distract drivers. Strong consumer demand for tactile controls has even prompted Hyundai Motor Group to reconsider whether oversized screens are truly necessary. Kia’s approach has not only won customer approval but also established a distinct design advantage in a crowded market.
