To circumvent the European Union's additional tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, Geely is in deep discussions with Ford about an industrial partnership: leveraging Ford’s underutilized plant in Valencia, Spain, to produce Geely-branded vehicles. The facility currently mainly produces the Ford Kuga SUV. If the collaboration materializes, Geely would achieve localized manufacturing, avoiding hefty tariffs and enhancing its price competitiveness, while Ford could boost plant utilization without requiring additional investment. This move also reflects a broader trend among global automakers—facing high costs and trade barriers—to adapt to market shifts through resource sharing. Although Geely owns brands such as Volvo and Lotus, its own-brand sales in Europe remain limited, making local production a crucial step forward.
