BYD is accelerating its localization strategy in Brazil. According to Alexander Baldi, head of BYD’s Brazilian operations, the company plans to source or manufacture half of the components for vehicles produced at its Brazilian plant locally by the end of 2026, with a final target date of January 1, 2027. The factory, located on the former Ford site and spanning over 4 million square meters, has produced approximately 25,000 all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles since production began in October 2023. BYD aims to become Brazil’s top-selling automotive brand by 2030 and could start exporting locally made vehicles to Mercosur countries as early as this year. Currently, the stamping, welding, and painting workshops are nearing completion, and annual production capacity will increase from 150,000 units in 2026 to 300,000 units. Notably, in October 2025, BYD rolled out its 14 millionth new energy vehicle in Brazil, an event attended by Brazilian President Lula, who also became an owner of the vehicle.
