BYD is developing a new model exclusively for India—a key market outside China—as part of its intensified global expansion strategy. Li Ke, Executive Vice President of the company, revealed during the World Government Summit in Dubai that engineers at BYD’s Shenzhen headquarters have already begun designing the vehicle, which will be customized to meet the specific needs of Indian consumers. She emphasized that the current priority is product introduction rather than establishing local manufacturing facilities. In 2025, BYD sold 2.26 million new energy vehicles globally, surpassing Tesla to become the world’s top seller. The company has set an overseas sales target of approximately 1.3 million units for 2026, representing a year-over-year increase of at least 24%. Due to high U.S. tariffs, BYD is focusing on markets outside the United States and ramping up the rollout of long-range plug-in hybrid models. Additionally, in compliance with new Chinese regulations, all export models will now feature mechanical door handles.
