The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently issued a mandatory national standard, "Safety Technical Requirements for Automotive Door Handles" (GB 48001-2026), which will take effect on January 1, 2027. The new regulation explicitly requires all vehicle doors to be equipped with a mechanical release mechanism, ensuring they can still be manually opened after a crash—effectively ending the use of fully concealed door handles lacking any mechanical structure. This standard stems from multiple safety incidents where power failures caused door handles to malfunction, obstructing occupant escape, particularly controversies involving models such as those from Tesla. The standard will be implemented in phases: newly submitted vehicle models must comply with most requirements starting in 2027, and all vehicles sold in the market must fully meet the standard by 2029. The move does not ban concealed designs outright but mandates the inclusion of a mechanical emergency function to raise the baseline safety level of vehicles.
