Mark Templin, Chief Operating Officer of Toyota North America, said recently at the NADA Show that the company currently has no plans to quickly launch a compact pickup truck to compete with the Ford Maverick, urging consumers to "be patient." He noted that Toyota "might take action" when market conditions are right, but emphasized that the segment remains relatively small overall, with annual sales of only about 160,000 to 170,000 units. Although the Maverick sold 155,000 units last year, making it the segment leader, Hyundai has announced it will discontinue the Santa Cruz due to weak sales—just 25,000 units in 2025. Toyota has previously indicated multiple times that it is studying the segment but remains concerned about costs and pricing. Industry analysts believe Toyota’s cautious, wait-and-see approach is a reasonable strategy until market demand becomes clearer.
