Recently, TikTok user Zoe posted a video asking: At an automated car wash, if she selects the "premium" package while the car ahead of her chooses the "basic" package, how does the machine actually tell them apart? She wondered whether she was simply paying more for the same service. Commenters explained that modern car wash systems typically use license plate recognition, RFID tags, or chip-equipped stickers affixed to the windshield to identify the selected package and automatically adjust the washing process accordingly. Some car washes also integrate digital POS systems that link license plates, membership accounts, and purchase records to enable fully automated service matching. Experts noted that there are indeed differences among wash tiers: the basic package includes rinsing and drying; the mid-tier adds undercarriage cleaning, recommended once per season; and the premium option often includes waxing and other detailing services primarily aimed at enhancing appearance—such as preventing water spots—but these are not essential.
