In February 2026, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially announced the repeal of several vehicle emissions standards, including the automatic stop-start (Auto Stop/Start) technology, calling it "the largest deregulatory action in American history." The technology had previously helped automakers meet fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions targets through "off-cycle credits," but faced widespread criticism as many drivers found it annoying. The new policy eliminates these credit incentives, removing automakers' motivation to include the feature as standard equipment. Although automatic stop-start is not banned, it may in the future be offered only as an optional feature—or gradually disappear altogether. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated the move aims to restore consumer choice and reduce "hidden costs." This adjustment is part of the Trump administration's broader effort to roll back automotive emissions regulations.
